EXHIBITION: A Dark Wood
ENTRIES DUE: September 8, 2016
EXHIBITION DATES: October 8 to December 9, 2016
VENUES: A Dark Wood is a special collaboration between Art House Gallery and Curious Matter. The exhibition will take place concurrently in both galleries. The curators will assign the venue for works selected.
THEME: “Midway this life we’re bound upon, I woke to find myself in a dark wood, Where the right road was wholly lost and gone” —Dante, The Divine Comedy When Dante found himself lost in a dark wood, he trusted himself first to Virgil to guide him through the temptations and torments of Hell and the penance and redemption of Purgatory, then to Beatrice to see the blessed souls in Paradise. Today, in these uncertain times of contentious changes in political office, struggles with heavy handed policing, and bringing rights to sexual minorities and other underrepresented communities, we may feel that we have lost our way to the truth. Here in this place of confusion and doubt, is where we need direction and guidance. Curious Matter and Art House Gallery are looking for work that addresses the theme of A Dark Wood, however your artistic practice may define it. Richard Serra’s immersive sculptures literally lead you into then out of that dark place; Diane Arbus made the neglected side of our culture her life’s work; James Ensor portrayed the sinister in the everyday; David Wojnarowicz unrelentingly tried to expose the death and suffering of a plague that most were trying to ignore. The curators are not looking to illustrate the theme, but rather to use it as a departure point to consider how it might intersect with contemporary art practices. Therefore, broad interpretations of the theme are welcome. (A catalogue will accompany the exhibition and the opening receptions will take place during the 26th Annual Jersey City Art & Studio Tour.)
Application Instructions / Public Contact Information
CURATION: The exhibition is curated from the open call. This approach is distinct from a juried exhibition. Art House Gallery (arthouseproductions.org) and Curious Matter (curiousmatter.org) open calls are an opportunity to look beyond established networks to bring together a diverse group of artists. The curation team is rigorous in the service of the artists, the exhibition and audience. In addition to the quality of the work, balance, space and other factors influence final selections. This means some excellent and appropriate work may not ultimately be included. We hope all the artists submitting work understand this and continue to respond to future calls.
