This year, Saint Michael Parish, a Roman Catholic community, celebrates 150 years of serving the greater Hamilton Park neighborhood of downtown Jersey City. Saint Michael’s was founded in 1867 to serve a rapidly expanding population of first and second generation working-class Irish Catholics, who toiled at the docks or in Jersey City’s factories and railroads. Today the parish still welcomes immigrants, but now the church pews are filled with families representing every continent but Antarctica, and most of Saint Michael’s parishioners now work in 21st-century professions. Through all the changes of fifteen decades, Saint Michael Parish has remained, evolved and endured. We are grateful to have reached our 150th Anniversary, and will mark this milestone with a Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday October 15, 2017, at 10:30 AM, to be followed by a Gala Brunch Reception at Casino in the Park from 12:30 to 4:30.
