Some time ago, a little girl named Dorothy lived on a farm in the midst of the great Kansas with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. One day, when Dorothy and her dog, Toto, were playing in their backyard, the sky grew suddenly dark and the wind howled fiercely through the tall grass. Uncle Henry shouted for Dorothy to run to the storm cellar beneath the house. Dorothy and Toto got only as far as the house when it slowly began to rise, lifting them higher and higher, into the sky. Soon it began to drift, and floated miles and miles away. Although the wind howled horribly, Dorothy and Toto felt as though they were being gently rocked, and so they fell asleep.
In the morning, they awoke to find themselves in very beautiful
– surroundings. The trees were orange and red, and even pink.
Winding through the rainbow-colored hills was a road of shining yellow bricks. This was not at all like the grey farm lands of Kansas. The first person they met was a little man, hardly bigger
than Toto himself. His name was Cosmo and he told Dorothy she was in the wonderful Land of Oz. While she was talking to Cosmo, a beautiful lady appeared out of the sky, who introduced herself as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. In the excitement of meeting Glinda, Toto had run off and Dorothy could not find him. She was very upset, not only because she wanted her dog, but also she thought she had better get back to Kansas. Glinda explained that the only one who could help her was THE WIZARD OF OZ, the ruler of the land. Glinda suggested that Dorothy follow the yellow brick road, which would take her to the Emerald City. There she would find THE WIZARD OF OZ.
So, Dorothy started her travels. She had not gone very far when she met the Silly Strawman who wanted brains, the Shiny Tin Man who wanted a heart, and the Cowardly Lion who wanted courage. Since she was convinced THE WIZARD OF OZ could do anything asked of him, she invited these new friends to join her …
Finally, they arrived at the Emerald City and found their way to the Throne Room of THE WIZARD OF OZ. Much to their surprise, THE WIZARD OF OZ was not a person at all. All they could see was a huge head floating through green flame. They made their wishes known, and a thundering voice told them their wishes would be granted, if they would destroy, the wicked Witch of the West.
Wearily, but bravely, they trudged along until they came to the cave of the Wicked witch.. Meanwhile, the witch and her assistant, a flying monkey named Diddlewing, looked into their crystal ball and watched as the four approached the cave. However, the witch had many magical powers and was not about to be destroyed so easily.
Did they conquer the witch? Did they get their wishes granted? You will find the answers to these questions when the PUPPETWORKS present their musical production of THE WIZARD OF OZ.
