When Bergen Square was first established in 1660 as Bergen Village, nobody could have known that along with other settlements, such as Pavonia and Communipaw, it would eventually assimilate and form the Jersey City we know today.
The Bergen Square Historical Society remembers its history and will celebrate Bergen Square’s role in the start of our nation with the 2019 Bergen Apple Fest on Saturday, Oct. 26, from noon to 5 p.m.
The day will feature a community apple-dessert bakeoff with free tastings; kids’ activities, tours of the Apple Tree House; local history; music including acapella group Cabaret Sauvignon, Latin jazz band Flying South Trio, and the Carol Lester Trio; and food vendors. An exhibit, Black Jersey City 1660 to the Present, will also be featured.
Other activities include a Halloween costume contest, a French-style mime, and hay bales.
Each year the event takes place on the grounds of the Van Wagenen/Apple Tree House, at 298 Academy St., Jersey City. The historic home is on one of the original lots of Bergen Village. The four blocks that made up the original settlement still stand as the four blocks of Bergen Square today.
The event is free to attend and sponsored by the C-Town supermarket located at Bergen Square and will be hosted by the Bergen Square Historical Society, Jersey City Art & Culture, The New Journal Square – JSQ, The Apple Tree House, and the Journal Square Community Association.
