The City of Jersey City, Mayor Steven M. Fulop, the Office of Municipal Council and the Office of Cultural Affairs were proud to celebrate 232nd Bastille Day Anniversary with the Consulate General of France in New York,  French American Academy and members of the French community during the Flag Raising Ceremony on Tuesday, July 14th, 2021.

France was the first power to ally itself in 1778 with the newly born United States of America, and contributed to its independence with financial support during the American Revolution.  On July 14, 1789 the people of Paris stormed and captured the notorious Bastille prison, a symbol of arbitrariness and oppression, and five weeks later in August 1789, the French National Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the citizen proclaiming that all men are both free and endowed with equal rights.

The United States and France have stood together in two World Wars to defend and uphold the principles strongly by our two nations; and stand together in the defense of freedom in NATO and UN led operations. We note with pride that the United States and France remain committed to the principles of individual liberty, equality, and representative government.

The French community has directly contributed to the diversity and positive growth of Jersey City in various fields, including education, entrepreneurship, government, literature, drama, sculpture, music, food, and culture, as well as all aspects of life throughout the United States and abroad; and continues to influence our beliefs, embedded values and quest for independence.

A group of people hold the French Flag before it is raised. The French flag is known as the “Le drapeau tricolore” as it has three equal vertical bands of blue, white, and red. 2. The white in the flag represents the Bourbon monarchy which ruled France from the late 16th Century AD until the French Revolution. It is also the colour of the Virgin Mary and Joan of Arc.
