Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic 1968 speech at Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church in Jersey City, St. Peter’s University Professor of History Dr. John Johnson will deliver a lecture reflecting on the impact of King’s visit to Jersey City, his role within the Civil Rights Movement in the North, the Poor People’s Campaign, and the lasting effects of King’s legacy within our community.

Enjoy a lecture and Q&A, followed by light refreshments. The Apple Tree House will also be open to the public for those interested in viewing the historic renovations.

Please be reminded that seating is on a first come, first serve basis. Tickets not claimed prior to 15 minutes before the event starts may be released to other patrons.

  • BY CAR-Limited free parking is available on-site. There is also a paid parking lot directly across the street.

LECTURER: DR. JOHN WESLEY JOHNSON, JR., ST. PETER’S UNIVERSITY, JERSEY CITY

Dr. John Wesley Johnson, Jr., from Newark, NJ, is an assistant professor of history at Saint Peter’s University. John earned his master’s in history and a PhD in American Studies from Rutgers University-Newark. Before joining the Saint Peter’s, John was a fellow at the Clement A. Price Institute on Ethnicity, Culture, and the Modern Experience, and the Executive Director of Newark Celebration 350, the organization that led the celebration of the 350th anniversary of the founding of Newark. John’s research and teaching interests are centered on the political and cultural history of 20th century United States, African American history, history of immigration, and Urban Studies. A seasoned educator, John has taught high school as well as undergraduate students, and served as a middle school administrator, and higher education program coordinator and resident counselor. For over a decade he has worked with pre-college and undergraduate educational programs as an instructor and administrator. At Saint Peter’s University has taught course on immigration history, the Civil Rights Movement, and the television series the Wire. In his personal life, John and his wife Lauren are raising their 5-year-old Boxer, Ruben. In his spare time John enjoys cycling, fencing, watching baseball, and listening jazz. He currently lives in Plainfield, New Jersey.
