The City of Jersey City is proud to recognize the Sudanese American Community of Jersey City as we celebrate the 66th Anniversary of Sudan’s Independence during the Flag Raising Ceremony on Monday, December 19, 2022.
In 1822 the most of the territory of Sudan was under Egyptian rule. In the second half of the 19 century, Sudan was administered as a British colony. But at some point, the British wanted to reunite all the land, so they started this process under the Egyptian leadership by Muhammad Ali Pasha.  From 1924 and until 1956, Sudan was administered by the British as two separate territories. The march towards Sudanese independence started in 1952 when the Egyptian Revolution began. The revolution led to the abolishing of the monarchy in 1953. The leaders of Egypt believed that they could stop British domination in Sudan only when they officially abandoned their sovereignty claims over Sudan. On the other hand, the British supported Sudan politically and financially. This led to the polling process that ended with the composition of a democratic parliament in Sudan and the election of the first Prime Minister, Ismail al-Azhari. The Republic of Sudan formally attained its independence from the United Kingdom and Egypt on January 1, 1956. On that day, both the Egyptian and British flags were lowered, and the new Sudanese flag was raised by Ismail al-Azhari.

The Sudanese community  has directly contributed to the diversity and positive growth of Jersey City in various fields, including education, entrepreneurship, government, literature, drama, sculpture, music, food, and culture, as well as all aspects of life throughout the United States and abroad; and continues to influence our beliefs, embedded values and quest for independence. Today, The City of Jersey City and members of the Sudanese community commemorate this day by proudly displaying the flags of the United States and the Republic of Sudan, high above City Hall in recognition of the socially adopted culture and ethnic diversity of our community of Jersey City.

STEVEN M. FULOP, MAYOR of the City of Jersey City, hereby proclaim that we honor Sudanese Independence on December 19, 2022, in Jersey City and urge all our residents to celebrate with the appropriate ceremonies and festivities. This momentous occasion reflects the camaraderie built between the United States and the Republic of Sudan and our enduring love for freedom, liberty, and democracy that today the world is still inspired by.
